Duties
The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
Operates one or more motor vehicles including straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more the 32,000 pounds, or truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers. Some of the vehicles operated may have manual transmissions with from four to ten forward gears and high and low auxiliary transmission. Operates these vehicles on interstate highways, winding roads, and steep grades and manipulates the dual braking system (if vehicle is equipped with this type of brake system) to prevent the semi-trailer or trailer from jackknifing. Maneuvers vehicles operated within close tolerances when driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas, and between buildings and other vehicles. The incumbent is responsible for selecting the safest, most direct, and legally allowed route to be followed, and identifying alternative routes if emergency situations arise. Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated to include fluid levels, lights, brakes and operational procedures, greasing moving parts, changing oil, fuel and air filters, cleaning and washing vehicles, and minor repairs. Maintains records of vehicle service. Also uses small gas-powered equipment such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, blowers, etc. to maintain roadways and parking lots.
Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.
Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to rain, fog, and extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- You must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time to on-call as workload dictates.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
- (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
- Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee’s responsibility.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to do the work of Motor Vehicle Operator WG-5703-08 without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT): Operate at least two types of motor vehicles (platform trucks, van trucks, fuel trucks, stake trucks, and trash removal trucks with a rear end compactor plate) which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,0000 pounds are equipped with air brakes to pick up and deliver materials and equipment or tow equipment to various locations and work sites. Operate maintenance on one or more of these motor vehicles.
